THE IRON LADY (film) was bland and boring and totally undeserving of Meryl Streep's flawless performance

Cast: Meryl Streep; Jim Broadbent; Harry Lloyd; Olivia Colman; Richard E. Grant.
Year: 2011.
Director: Phyllida Lloyd.
Content Rating: PG 13 for some violent images and brief nudity.
Source: Library.

An elderly Margaret Thatcher talks to the imagined presence of her recently deceased husband as she struggles to come to terms with his death while scenes from her past life, from girlhood to British prime minister, intervene.

Overall, Meryl Streep is excellent. The movie isn't.

Meryl Streep is flawless. She moves like a ghost between flashbacks and the present, portraying Thatcher perfectly. Basically, you can't go wrong with Meryl Streep. She makes everything worth watching, although this movie came very close to being an exception.

The supporting performances were good. Alexandra Roach as young Thatcher didn't really offer much, but she wasn't awful.  And Harry Lloyd was cute and slightly creepy as her young husband.
Olivia Colman brings strength to every scene as Thatcher's daughter, and Jim Broadbent is equally solid as her husband; most of the time simply an illusion of Thatcher's.

The real fault of this film is the film. Does that make sense?! The point is, it's grey and bland and boring. There is no point. No opinion. No theme. Thatcher's life is being shown, but why? Was she the hero or the villain? This movie doesn't know. It skims, it shifts; it fades out into a grey background and leaves Meryl Streep to make the most of it. She does, obviously, and does it brilliantly, but otherwise the actual film is weak and wishy-washy.

The cinematography is very good, but even grey gets a bit much after a while. No, it isn't black and white (hence the gray-ish bits) but grey is definitely the dominate colour when there aren't flashbacks to Thatcher's former life.

Meryl Streep is excellent, but the film itself is poor :( I don't recommend it.

I give it: 2 flowers!
