The Blog Squad: Part 23

We are a group of three book bloggers situated on different continents but brought together by our love for books and a penchant for talking about them. We’ve joined our forces to create a collaborative series of posts about book blogging and we hope you’ll enjoy the discussions.

What are blog buttons?

A blog button is basically a little badge that links to a blog when it’s clicked. They are generally placed in a sidebar or on a page to show support for another blog. You can design your own with a Grab My Button generator and add the widget to your blog to allow other bloggers to ‘Grab Your Button’.

A blog button is a badge (an image) with a HTML code linking to your blog. When other bloggers copy the HTML code and paste it on their blog sidebar, it appears as a cute image. Clicking on that image leads people to your blog! I didn’t use any generator but searched for the HTML code on Google, uploaded my button image to Google photos and worked it out! Using a generator would be so much easier!

I like how it’s a cute way of showing off the blog you love on your own blog without it seeming spammy!

What are your top 'widgets' that you use on your blog?

Follow Me
As far as widgets go the most important one on your blog will be any that allow people to follow your blog. Either by GFC, BlogLovin, Subscribing to your emails or your social media links.

Blog Archive
Also important is a way for people to be able to read your older posts - I often like browsing back over the previous month or so to see what a blogger might have posted, especially if the blog is new to me. I like to see what reviews have been published (are our reading interests similar?), what memes does the blogger participate in and how regularly have they been posting.

Blogger Profile
I also like to see a bit of a profile pic and a short paragraph or two introducing the person behind the blog.

Blog Search Another easily forgotten but definitely important widget for me is a search bar so that readers can easily find whatever they may be looking for on a blog. I often find myself searching blogs for a specific book or post.

Holy heavens I think I use a lot of widgets? But not so much that it doesn’t allow my blog to load!

The widgets in my blog are -

GFC Follower
In one of my earlier Squad posts, How to Map your Blog, I talked about how extremely important it is to have a visible blog button that your visitors can follow easily. So I kept it high up on my right sidebar.

Google Plus Profile and Follow Me
It’s great to have people follow your blog in more than one manner which is why I have Google Plus follow widget too.

Search This Blog
If you’re looking for a particular post of mine, it’s so easy to just type it in there.

Bloglovin Follow Gadget Another way to follow my blog!

Popular Posts and Blog Archive
Popular posts ‘cause that tells you what others love on my blog and Archive because as Amy says, it’s professional and helpful! Twitter and Pinterest Widgets A great way of finding me in those places! Both my Twitter and pinterest are very bookish - reading stuff or writing stuff!

Do you have a 'Blog Roll' on your blog?

At the moment I don’t. I used to and bringing this back is something I’m still working on. Creating a dedicated page for a blog roll is one of my top blogging priorities actually but I just never seem to be able to find the time to get around to it! Not only is it to support other blogs and show their latest posts, but I also find it so useful for myself to be able to quickly visit new posts on my favourite blogs.

I have a blog roll in my blog but like Amy’s, mine is tiny and it’s more a list that a roll? It shows my favorite in the order of latest activity. It doesn’t show their latest posts though! I need to work on my sidebars a bit for that!

If you have any specific questions you’d like us to address in the future, please let us know in the comments section below. Stay tuned for next week’s questions!

  1. My blog roll needs to be updated some, it's funny how I had to update it after a few bloggers went inactive, and I may have to again. And thanks for the tips on blog buttons!

    1. That's a good point, I guess - especially if it's a long list.
      Glad you found them useful!

  2. I love when bloggers have easy-to-find ways to follow them, right on the homepage. And I think a search function is crucial - sometimes I remember reading something on a blog but not where I read it, so if I can search for it, that's great.

    1. Same. It makes things so much easier.
      It is!

  3. I think a blog button is like a tool that helps others to link to use, so it's important. It's like a brand as well. I need to update mine though since I've recently changed my domain.

Top widgets? Hmm, mine are 'follow my blog via email,' 'sosmed,' 'recent posts,' 'blog search,' and 'archives.' Those are important for me.

Blogroll? I'm planning to have it soon. I love seeing bloggers who support and feature other bloggers and have been on some of them myself. I know the feeling. It's awesome.

As always, awesome discussion!! You guys ROCK. ❤️ :)

    1. So true :)

They are important. And yeah, blogrolls are so cool too!

Thanks Geybie! Love hearing from you ❤❤

  4. Wonderful post, as usual! :) I LOVE the followers widget. It's so important to have that one location where new visitors can see it immediately!

    1. Thank you, Erica!
Yay and me too!! It is so awesome!

  5. I'm actually pretty new to blog buttons and blog rolls so I should definitely look into that! One of the biggest reasons I love book blogging is the wonderful community so why miss out on a chance t spread the love?
My top widgets are probably the search, recent posts and most popular posts. And of course the Follow Me button! :) And I actually kind of love the social media widgets as well.

    1. They're so cool! And exactly :) <3

Yeah they are awesome. I loved choosing my icons - it was so fun, lol ;)
Thanks for stopping by, Lindsey :)
